Changing a slug that is already live costs you the page

The old address returns 404 and whatever ranking it held goes with it, unless you redirect the old one to the new one. Use this for pages you have not published yet, and if the page is already live, build the redirect first in the redirect rule generator.

What this changes, and what it does not

A slug is the readable part of the address. It is a small ranking signal at best, and Google has said so, but it is a large clarity signal: it is what somebody sees before they click, and what they read in a pasted link.

Accented and non-English characters are transliterated rather than dropped, so Café & Bakery Guide becomes cafe-and-bakery-guide and never cafe--bakery-guide: an ampersand becomes the word, and a run of separators collapses to one hyphen.
